J Top 10 Things To Know About Your
Child J
(Jeff Bradford -
Child Guidance - 381-3266)
- Don’t leave your
children alone! This is considered a form of neglect which is a form of
abuse. Make sure your children are clean! Social workers interpret unclean
children to be neglected. If you want to report a child being neglected or
abused, call the DCBS Hotline at 245-5258.
- Read to your child
every night before you go to bed. This is a special time that you can spend
with your child that makes them feel loved. It will help them with their
academics too!
- Tell your child that
you love them at least three times a day! Children don’t understand
concepts such as you providing them with food and shelter as a form of
love. They need to hear that you love them.
- Children require
structure and routine---it makes them feel safe! Make sure that there are
fair consequences for their mistakes. Use Time Outs---don’t hit! Good ideas
include:
- having the same bedtime
(about 8:30 during school)
- eating together as a
family
- playing games together
as a family
- having a regular place
and time to review homework
- Children’s brains
cannot process extreme violence or sexual information.
Be
very careful about the music that they hear, the movies that they see and
the adult conversations that they witness. They are listening and watching all
the time---don’t rob them of their innocence.
- School Tips! Don’t let
your child be late for school---more than six absences or tardies can get
you in trouble. Set their clothes out the night before. Wake them up to
give them plenty of time to eat. Rushing in the morning will make them
anxious during school.
- Divorce and death are
very scary things for children to experience. If they are experiencing
divorce or death, they need help to know that it isn’t their fault and that
they will be taken care of. Children need a good counselor to make it
through these difficult events.
- Chores and allowances
are very good for children. It helps them to learn the lessons of working
and saving money for things they want and need.
- Please do not smoke
around children. Second-hand
smoke can cause breathing problems like asthma and later contribute to
illnesses such as cancer.
- Go on dates! Your
children need to know that their parents love each other. Go out and have
some fun without your children !!!!
